Fantagraphics Books is proud to publish the coffee table-style art bookaccompanying the traveling Arnold Roth exhibition, celebrating 50 years ofcartooning which opened September 2000 at the University of the Arts in Roth'shome town of Philadelphia. The exhibit showcases almost 100 pieces of Roth'swork drawn over the last 50 years, and will travel to approximately ten venuesthroughout the United States and Europe through 2004. Roth is one of the mostsuccessful cartoonists of the second half of the 20th century, whose work hasappeared in Playboy, Esquire, Time, NationalLampoon, Saturday Evening Post, Sports Illustrated,Punch, Premiere, The Nation, Mother Jones,Harper's, Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, TVGuide, Smithsonian, and many other national magazines. He was also aregular artist in Harvey Kurtzman's three post-MAD humor magazines,TRUMP, Humbug, and Help!. The exhibition catalogue isprinted in an oversized format and features both black-and-white cartoons andstrips, plus an abundance of Roth's gorgeous, vivid watercolor cartoonpaintings, all of which appeared in disparate magazines over the years and noneof which are readily available to collectors and fans.
